The William Wilson Memorial 5k Run and Walk was established to remember and honor the life of the late, William Bancroft Mellor Wilson. Please join William's family and friends for the first annual 5K Run and Walk to promote the same healthy and active lifestyle William led, while raising funds for The Palmetto Cycling Coalition and William Wilson Scholarship Fund.
William Bancroft Mellor Wilson
William was born August 15, 1984, the third of five brothers in Columbia, South Carolina. He grew up in Columbia, attending St. Josephs School then Cardinal Newman High School. He looked forward to his summers in Maine with his family and valued visits with his grandparents, many aunts, uncles, and cousins on the annual family trip up north. He especially cherished his time exploring the wildlife, rivers, and waters of Maine with his brothers while learning about life. William was crazy about being outside. He enjoyed camping, biking, fishing, being on water, anything to get him outside and get him moving! And he was good at it all!
William was quiet, but he did not need words, for he had a heart that loved so strongly you could feel it just being near him. He always led by example and his actions spoke endlessly. William was a son, brother, cousin, friend, and much more, indeed a valued pillar to his community.
William was not afraid of hard work, he enjoyed it, and he thrived off it. He loved new adventures and was passionate about so many things in his life. Running was one of his greatest passions. During his senior year at Cardinal Newman High School, he was undefeated and state champion in cross-country. William was an eleven letter cross country/ track participant at The Citadel and voted cross-country MVP in 2005. He was a member of The Citadel relay team that placed 3rd in the all-conference distance medley relay/men's indoor track and field in both 2006 and 2007. In college, William ran from The Citadel to Folly Beach to visit friends and say hi, just to turn around and run back. He earned the nickname the machine because he could do anything and made it look easy.
His love for running continued after college graduation, and he was training to run in the Kiawah Island Marathon. In his absence, a group of friends and family ran in his honor. This race was only a few months after Williams death, bringing us closer together through him. He was a dedicated runner and an incredible leader.
The WW 5k will enable various individuals all over the community to share his energy and keep his memory alive. We are excited to hit the ground running on this event, August 14, 2010!
